The Good News

I am linking up for the Five Minute Friday. The FMF is hosted by Kate Motaung on her blog Heading Home. Today’s prompt is “news”!

I have a degree in communications with an English minor and an emphasis in Journalism. During my internship in college, I realized I loved doing feature stories but very much disliked doing the hard news stories. I would much rather get to know a person than write about the latest happenings. In realizing this, I also realized that perhaps God was calling me to somewhere else and led me straight to seminary.

Even to this day, I love watching and reading the feel good stories, but dislike the usual news. In fact, most days I don’t even pick up a newspaper or watch the latest news cast because of the ugly stuff that is happening in our world; murders, war, fighting, etc. It seems like the news is always full of such hatred and horrible things happening in our world.

I would much rather hear the good news of a friend’s book being published or a book contract signed or friends finalizing their adoption. On Thursday nights, I would much rather turn to my Twitter feed where I will find fun and funny news. Tonight our topics ranged from where do you go to write and what is your beverage of choice to food to LuLaRoe leggings. This is the news that puts a smile on my face. This is the news that reminds me that all is not lost or horrible in this world.

The truth though, my friends, is that the ultimate truth is found in the good book; in the good news of Jesus Christ who came into the world for each and every one of us. This Good News brings promises of hope and peace and love and grace. This Good News reminds us that this is the news that has the ultimate say over everything that is happening in our world. This Good News is the news that I want to cling to each and every day!

  1. I am with you, I don't like to watch the news because all if the bad things in the world. I don't remember my number this week but I'm there but my topic is not news, it's deep waters. It's a post I wrote about trials today.

  2. I always wish the media reported more good news. It is out there, but the focus seems to be so much on the bad news. Grateful for the ultimate good news we have in Jesus.

  3. How relational we are, Tara. I'm with you, I love the good news, and especially the good news of friends over hearing the "hard-hitting" reporting about the events in this world. And the fact that we have good news because of Jesus? That's the best part of it all.

I loved this: "This Good News brings promises of hope and peace and love and grace. This Good News reminds us that this is the news that has the ultimate say over everything that is happening in our world."

    Great post, my friend!

    • Jeanne, yes we are indeed relational. God created us to be in relationship with one another. The good news because of Jesus is for sure the best part of it all! That is one of my fave lines in this post as well.

  4. Tara, I'm with you on the news feeling like saturation and over-information. The same things get repeated ad nauseam. It can lead to a dulling in the mind and a desire to reach for the remote control. On the other hand, the Good News is refreshingly restorative. And it always provides hope for this life and beyond.
Where I do differ is in the time zone and country I live in, all of which makes participating in the fmf party time impossible to do. So I miss the fun of that and the way it helps build community. But I am grateful for all who come by to read my words as I also try to catch up with theirs! πŸ™‚ x

    • Saturation and over-information….those are good descriptive words. Oh yes, the Good News is indeed refreshingly restorative. I am sorry that you cannot join us for FMF Twitter Party due to your time zone and country. We are grateful that you come to read our words too!

  5. Tara,
oh what joy in fellowship. And truly, our Twitter accounts could also be backlogged with negativity if we tuned in to the wrong station. πŸ™‚ My news radio is Jesus. LOL.
    Love your post, again!
    Love,

    • Tammy, yes! You are so right…our Twitter feeds could indeed be backlogged with negativity if we found ourselves tuning into the wrong feeds. I love that your news radio is Jesus…mine too!!!

  6. I don't like to watch the news much either. It seems full of hard things and you don't hear much good, even though I know it's out there. What a blessing to know that our hope is in God, not in news reports. πŸ™‚ Blessings to you!

  7. So true. Christ's sacrifice and love is indeed the Good News for the whole world. By the way, we are both former journalism students. Something else we have in common. I liked writing feature stories the most too:)

    • Mary, Yes!! That is so fun that we are both former Journalism students. Yes, something else that we have in common. I also love that feature stories were your favorite too.

  8. Amen, Tara! I cling to the Good News of Christ! It is gonna get us through all the terrible stuff this world seems to always throw at us.
