Should You Still Write?

I am linking up for Five Minute Friday. The FMF is hosted by Kate Motaung on her blog Heading Home. Today’s prompt is “should.” I love spending time with this crew. They bring me joy!

When the well runs dry and there is no words to be found

Should you still write?

When the words are overflowing and brimming to the top

Is it then that you should write too?

When the world is filled with darkness and the loss of hope

And everyone seems to be clinging to the light and looking for hope

Is it then that you should write too?

The Word is a gift

given to us by God

through the birth of God’s Son Jesus Christ.

I can’t help but turn to the words of John 1

“In the beginning was the Word,

And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

All things came into being through Him.”

The Living Water given to help us share

through our own words

To share when the the well is running dry

Or the world  is dark and looking for hope

and also when the cup is overflowing and brimming to the top.

There are times I find myself searching for the words

And other times when the words spill out onto the page easily

For all to read and to see.

Wherever you find yourself today,

With a cup brimming with word goodness

Or with you searching at the bottom of the well to find your words

You should write; write until the words bring healing and wholeness.

Write knowing Jesus is the Word made flesh

that never leaves us or forsakes us.

  1. I agree, it’s good to keep writing. Sometimes I feel I have nothing to say but if I start writing anyway, often something good comes. Otherwise it helps me process, even if it’s not for anyone else to see. I love this line: “Write knowing Jesus is the Word made flesh
that never leaves us or forsakes us.”

  2. I love the way this poem progressed Tara, especially related to the “when it’s empty, write” part today. I struggled with this prompt. I set my timer 3 times before I finally connected with the topic. My first three attempts were variations of a honey do list. “I should be folding laundry, paying bills, etc etc. So glad I persisted and kept going, because once I finally did connect, I really had an “aha” moment!

  3. Tara, such good words here. I have a number of friends who say they can’t write. So, for those of us who can, who process through the written word, who communicate and who find delight in putting words to page, we should write. We never know how God will use those words to minister to another. Thank you for this poem!

  4. Tara, you’ve shared beautiful words of encouragement. I like that you ended with our eyes focused on Jesus. Visiting from #17 at FMF today.

  5. this is beautiful, and wonderful use of the word “should”—you visited my blog, so you know my feelings about that word. And yes, even in those uninspired times, we all need to write, draw, paint, make music. Peace and hope!

  6. I echo the sentiments of all those above – so encouraging and true. Writing is the thing that connects us all, and I’m so grateful to have discovered it!

  7. Tara, such a great exhortation! I love how you brought in the passage of john to remind us who is the author of our words. “The Living Water given to help us share through our own words To share when the the well is running dry Or the world is dark and looking for hope” Echoes of creation still speaking.
