I am linking up for the Five Minute Friday. The FMF is hosted by Kate Motaung on her blog Heading Home. Today’s prompt is “five.” We would love to have you join us. Just hop onto Twitter on Thursday evenings and follow the #fmfparty. Hope to see you there.
“Five hundred twenty-five thousand Six hundred minutes, moments so dear. How do you measure, measure a year? In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee, in inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife? Five hundred twenty-five thousand Six hundred minutes, moments so dear. How do you measure, measure a year? How about love? Measure in love, seasons of love, seasons of love.”
These words were the first words that popped into my mind the minute I heard the prompt. Rent is one of my all-time favorite movies. It is one of those movies that makes me think but also makes me feel good in the end. And who doesn’t love a good musical they can sing along too? {And don’t get me started….I just heard the Hamilton soundtrack. Already hooked)
I love the simplicity of these lyrics. How do you measure a year…in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee? YES! I don’t know about you but I have been thinking a lot about how we honor, respect and show love to one another. Perhaps it’s in buying coffee for friends or sitting and holding a friend while tears stream down his/her face. Or maybe it’s simply over the interwebs…sending a tweet or IM that reminds them how incredibly loved they are.
The reality is that it takes five minutes or less to make a difference in someone’s day. The other day I tweeted several friends a quick tweet that just said I was thinking of them and reminding them that they are loved. It literally took me less than a few minutes to write the note and send it out.
How can you make a difference in a friend or family members day today in less than five minutes? I’d love to hear your ideas!
Hello Tara,
Well, you certainly used this five minutes well! I'm joining you from Five Minute Friday, and really enjoyed your post. I also wrote about how we spend our "five minutes", and am being challenged in my own life in this area. Thanks for the encouragement to use our valuable time to bless another.
Thank You!
Tara, it's interesting how much can be accomplished in just 5 minutes. It doesn't take long at all to bring some cheer into someone's life. Love your post! Blessings to you!
Gayl, it truly is, isn't it? Blessings to you too!
Yes, Tara, you certainly ARE in the book; in fact, yours begins on the right side page that has the ending of mine!!! Imagine that!! And, yes, it only takes five minutes to do a random act of kindness – buy someone a coffee or soda; pay for the person's order behind you in the drive-thru, or the grocery store line; send a note or card through the Internet, IM, or those "other" forms of connecting (that I don't have)…or even a REAL note or card!
Getting back into the FMF family; and trying hard to take the time to read a few of the other posts. It may take more than five minutes; but it is soooo worth it to maintain those connections!
That's fun that we are on pages next to each other. As a giver, I'm always about making someone else's day brighter. So glad to see you back at FMF.
I have the song well and truly stuck in my head now! Fortunately I like it! So true that a lot can be accomplished in five minutes and even just a small word of encouragement can make a huge difference. Looking forward to the book!
Lesley, it was stuck in my head too.
First, "Hamilton!" Yes.
Second, love where you went with this. You're right. It takes comparatively little time and effort on our part to reach out and encourage another. Good word!
Marie, I so need to go buy the Hamilton soundtrack. Thanks friend.
I've been thinking over what I could do for someone in 5 minutes, even before reading here. Thanks for sharing these inspiring words.
Way down at 57 this week š
Amber, you're so welcome.
Love this, Tara. Although…I don't think there's any need to measure a year.
Just live it.
#1 at FMF this week.

So true. Five minutes is all it takes to change someone's day. It means so much. Keep changing your world, Tara.
