Trusting in God’s Grace

This is Day 9 of 31 in my Write 31 Days series: 31 Stories of God’s Grace. I also am linking up for the Five Minute Friday. The FMF is hosted by Kate Motaung on her blog Heading Home. Today’s prompt is “Trust.” Write for five minutes; unedited.

Did you know that God’s grace is sufficient for you?

Because, my friends, God’s grace is indeed sufficient for you.

But, if you are anything like me, it probably has taken you a long time to trust in that promise.

When I went to seminary, I never realized how hard it was going to be (Watch for a post coming up about God’s grace in the midst of hearing the call to seminary!) But at seminary, God reminded me again and again of how I needed to put all of my trust in God because God’s grace was sufficient. God’s grace came in my seminary advisor. God’s grace came in a seminary professor. God’s grace came in new friends.

In addition, as my family has struggled living our story of mental illness, there have been many days when I have not trusted in the power and gift of God’s grace. Yet I have learned that God’s grace is sufficient for us all. God’s grace is sufficient for my mom who daily lives with a mental illness. God’s grace is sufficient for me as a daughter who sometimes gets frustrated with her mom. God’s grace is sufficient for all of us.

Indeed there are days when it is going to be hard for us to trust in the gift of God’s grace. Yet we just need to remember to trust in God.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him.”–Romans 15:13 (I would add the word grace to this verse as well…May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace and grace as you trust in him)

  1. what Andrew said… it seems as if it often takes running out of other more conventional, tame, humanly logical options before we trust God again. I'm parked in the #15 spot for FMF. Grace and peace to you, to all of us!

  2. I had a very difficult time in seminary. I don't know if you had this experience, but I was one of a handful of girls in seminary. Talk about discouraging! But God's grace was certainly sufficient during that time.

  3. Good morning! I tried to leave a comment last night from my phone but it didn't work. Look what you did here – you wrote beautifully about the gift of God's grace and how we need it in our lives. It is sufficient every time. Good to hang with you a bit last night!

    • I am so glad you stopped by again friend. Thank you for saying I wrote beautifully about God's grace. God's grace is indeed sufficient every time. It was so good to hang with you a bit at the Twitter party on Thursday too.

  4. Hey friend! Great post! Beautifully written! And how have I missed the fact that you went to seminary?? That's incredible! I love learning about those I get to do life with! Thank you for reminding me to trust in God's grace. Following you at FMF.

    • Thanks friend! Not sure how you missed that I went to seminary. Funny thing is I went to seminary in Iowa…Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque. I too like learning about those I get to do life with too.

  5. Something I am learning (the hard way) is that peace does NOT equal comfort. Living by faith can be the hardest, most uncomfortable thing to do! But wow, stepping out in those situations and truly experiencing being in the center of God's will is amazing even when it is awful at the same time.

  6. Tara,
🙂 See, you had it in you all along! God's grace covers us when we aren't trusting Him. He waits patiently for us to turn and see how much He's been carrying us in those hard times. I liken it to dancing. I love to see a graceful dancer. I imagine my gracefulness…but I often am not graceful. Still, my dance partner causes me to look as seasoned and graceful as Ginger Rogers when I'm following His lead, instead of trying to step the way I "think" He's going to lead me (which leads to tripping and ungracefulness, tee hee)
Love love love you! So glad to chat if only for a bit last night!

  7. Yes, He is with us through all things even in the difficult days. I have had an exhausting two weeks with 3 funerals and another passing away this week. Life can be draining yet He sustains us through all things! Thank you for your encouraging words!

  8. I've been hearing this theme a lot lately. I believe that the Lord must be wanting us to really put our trust in him in an deeper way in this season. Thanks for sharing truth with us.

  9. "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." – 1 Corinthians 12:9

The Holy Spirit led me to consider that whole passage of Paul's, but those worse in particular, a few years ago when I was diagnosed with chronic illness. I come back to them over and over again. They never stop being true, and they never stop growing in depth. Love you!

  10. Hi Tara – visiting back while not sleeping… aargh!

One of the pastors from my mom's church said she had to memorize all of the Psalms during seminary. I have to say, I WISH I knew all of the Psalms by heart, but I can't even imagine the task of memorizing them for a class. So now that's my impression of seminary –

So I stop in your verse at this… "May the God of hope fill you…" Yup, that's what I want to be – filled with the God of hope. Your post blessed me this early early morning – thank you!

    • Sorry you couldn't sleep. That is no fun. The Psalms are beautiful. As a poet, I have really become to appreciate them. I too indeed want to be filled with the God of hope. So glad my post blessed you!
